Kenya Harlequin FC are the new Driftwood Sevens champions after beating Impala RFC 24-14 in a close final played at the Mombasa Sports Club.
Impala were quick from kick off, making an early foray into Quins territory. Tournament MVP Lawrence Buyachi soon barged over for the game's opening try. Innocent Simiyu's conversion taking the scores to 7-0.
Quins would regroup, retaining possession from the Impala kickoff on the restart. Victor Oduor would play the ball to Naftali Bondo who narrowed the scores. Eden Adero's conversion leveled the scores at 7-7.
The first half woould remain tight, neither team ceding ground. They would go into the interval on level terms.
Second half action saw Quins edge slightly ahead, asking questions of Impala. They would eventually edge ahead with an unconverted try that brought the scores to 12-7.
They pushed ahead, in pursuit of a third try but lost possession deep in Impala territory. Dan Weku's opportunistic run saw him gain forty yards, outpacing Bondo to score at the corner. Simiyu's conversion saw Impala hold a narrow 14-12 lead.
Quins' response was immediate, Allan Omuka taking out Vincent Mose to touch down. Adero's missed conversion meant the scores were 17-14 in Quins favour but there was still a match on the cards.
Victor Sudi scored right at the death to extend Quins' lead. Adero's conversion saw them win it 24-14, earning 24 points that saw them finish the Western Union National Sevens Circuit in second place with 129 points,five adrift of Mwamba RFC who gathered 134 points.
Strathmore Leos won the Driftwood plate after beating Mean Machine 22-7. Antony Oyugi and Felix Ayange both scored a brace of tries with Ken Andola and Maurice Otieno putting over one conversion each.
