KCB MEET MEAN MACHINE IN FLOODLIT OPENER

KCB MEET MEAN MACHINE IN FLOODLIT OPENER

Mean Machine have a tough opening against Impala Floodlit champions Kenya Commercial Bank when the 26th tournament kicks off on February 9 at the Rugby Football Union of East Africa and Impala RFC grounds.

Sixteen teams will compete over three weekends for the total Sh141,000 prize money on offer. Organisers of the tournament said eight teams in the clubs and a similar number from schools have been invited.

Willy Ombisi, the vice chairman of the rugby section of Impala Club explained that two venues would be used on the opening day to ensure that the matches end on time.

Last year's runners up, Mwamba who will be missing four key players who are away on national duty will kick off the club's section against the United States International University-Africa. The narrowly lost to Mean Machine last Saturday in a friendly match at the University of Nairobi ground.

KCB have a change of guards with Bill Githinji taking over as coach of the Kenya Cup and Enterprise Cup champions. Nakuru RFC are coming over to Nairobi for the Floodlit despite the post election violence, which has affected their training programme. They play hosts Impala on the opening day.

Kenya Cup debutants Strathmore University face a stern test against Kenya Harlequin FC who are keen on improving on last year's performance.

Security has been beefed up as the organizers signed up a reputable security company and a good sprinkle of regular uniformed and plain cloth police.

Total prize money for the event has been maintained at Sh141,000. Overall winners of the Impala Floodlit will get Sh50,000, runners-up Sh30,000 and the third-placed team Sh15,000.
