Impala 8-6. Strathmore remained winless, going down 5-15 to Mwamba RFC
while Nondies picked up a 24-20 win over visiting Mean Machine.
The featured match saw Nivea for Men Quins stay top of the Kenya Cup
with an imperious display of rugby in their 37-12 away win over a
rather tame Kenya Commercial Bank RFC at the Lions Den in
Ruaraka...the much hyped top of the table clash turning out to be a
sparring session for the Ngong' Road side.
The league leaders were quick off the blocks, Tony Mutai scoring an
unconverted try on five minutes for a 5-0 lead. The home side would
soon draw level courtesy of a Frankline "Stooge" Amiani try that Peter
Mutai converted for a 7-5 lead.
Quins would soon assert themselves, Patrice Agunda slicing through the
KCB defense. The Lions survived this attack but soon surrendered the
lead when lock Jared Owinyo scored an unconverted try. 12-7 to Quins.
The Lions seemed to fall further apart, conceding a third try at the
stroke of half time when Kenya Sevens player Leon Adongo touched down.
Peter Abuoga converted for a 19-7 lead.
Quins began the second half with gutso, their pressure paying off when
another Kenya Sevens squad member Naftali Bondo made it 24-7. Abuoga
missed the conversion. He would however atone for his miss when he
sliced through a static KCB defense to ground the ball for Quins'
fifth try. His conversion took the scores to 31-7.
With the win all but assured, Edward Kinyany's charges took their foot
off the gas, not before Abuoga's massive penalty made it 34-7. Second
half replacement Brian "Ombwakni" Omondi scored KCB's consolation try
narrowing the deficit to 34-12. Abuoga consigned KCB to their heaviest
home defeat ever, drilling home a penalty for a 37-12 final score
line.
