KCB 27 Quins 18

14 man KCB survived a torrid second half to beat Kenya Cup champions
Kenya Harlequin 27-18,scoring four tries enroute to claiming a bonus
point that sees them stay top of the 2009 Kenya Cup.
After a tentative start,Peter Mutai put KCB ahead with a 3rd minute
penalty. Patrice Agunda soon won Quins a penalty that Jude Thumbi put
over to level on 8 minutes. The ensuing period saw Quins dominate but
KCB were rewarded with a Xavier Makuba try on 12 minutes. Mutai
converted as KCB led 10-3.
Quins soon won a penalty that Thumbi put over. KCB 10 Quins 6.
Thumbi would knock on from kick off and from the ensuing scrum
down,Jay Yahuma sliced through the Quins defence,setting up Philip
Gakara Wamae who scored a try under the posts. Mutai converted to
stretch the lead. KCB 17 Quins 6.
Derrick Wamalwa scored a third try as KCB led 22-6 at half time.
The second half saw KCB wing Benjamin Otieno Ojema shown a straight
red for stamping. Quins would dominate but the resolute KCB defence
kept them at bay. Mutai would be sin binned for punching but Quins
could not make their numerical advantage count. Calvins Biko earned
KCB their bonus point when he scored a try after a Yahuma instigated
moved. Mutai missed the conversion. KCB 27 Quins 6.
Two late tries by Allan Onyango and Sidney Ashioya topped up with a
Thumbi conversion saw the game end 27-18.
Earlier KCB II lost their unbeaten record,going down 8-20 to Quins II
in the Eric Shirley Shield.
