Lions beat Mwamba,go top of Kenya Cup

A five try blitz in the first half was enough to see KCB's Lions maintain their unbeaten record,triumph over hosts Mwamba 25-12 and take over the league leadership after Kenya Cup match day 6.

Number eight John Ahenda opened the scoring in the 10th minute with a push over try. Fullback Mike Walekhwa seemingly forgot his kicking boots at home, missing four conversions attempts.

Wing Richard Kinyany extended the Lions lead five minutes later, taking the scores to 10-0.Mike Walekhwa again missed the conversion.Second row Philip Wamae's try extended the Lions lead to 15-0 halfway through the first half. The Lions got their bonus point when Flanker Emmanuel Shitote touched down in the 29th minute to extend the scores to 20-0. Ahenda scored his second try of the game in the 35th minute.Harun Lubisia missed the conversion as the Lions took a 25-0 lead into the interval.

The second half saw Mwamba throw everything at the Lions and their persistance paid off when center Sidney Nderitu touched down 15 minutes into the half. Scores at this point 25-5. Humphery Khayange who combined well with substitute Collins Injera scored and converted Mwamba's second try.

Despite pressure from the home side in the closing moments of the game, the Lions held out to win 25-12 and go top of the Kenya Cup.

In the curtain raiser Eric Shirley Shield match played earlier at the same venue, the KCB Cubs registered their second successive win in beating Mwamba II 39-14.

Fly half Steve Matioli's outrageous try was the pick of the match that saw the Cubs score five tries, four conversions and two penalties enroute to the big win that also saw them stretch their unbeaten run to two matches.

Matioli received the ball from scrum half Dan Turungi, dummied the Mwamba backs before dashing 40 yards to score under the posts.Overall, the fly half accounted for 19 points off his try, four conversions and two penalties. Other try scorers for the Cubs were Ronald Njoga,Xavier Makuba,Brian Omondi and Jeff Vilembwa.
