The Lions win at Ruaraka

The KCB Lions picked up a bonus point in scoring four tries as they beat Mean Machine 28-11 in a Kenya Cup clash on Saturday at the Lions' Den in Ruaraka.The Lions led 14-6 at half time.

KCB started strongly,probing the Machine defence with several attacks and scored their first try after some good movement between the forwards and the backs.Reuben Kisaka touched down after 13 minutes.Peter Mutai converted for a 7-0 lead.

The Lions then faded,allowing Machine back into the game and conceded a penalty after continued pressure from the varsity side.Former KCB scrum half John Warui converted this penalty to reduce the deficit to 7-3 after 22 minutes.

Buoyed by this,Machine applied more pressure and won a penalty on the half way line.Fly half Kevin Gicheru kicked it over to bring Machine within a point of KCB.Scores after 27 minutes were now 7-6.

The Lions regrouped and started raiding the Machine defence and almost scored when fly half Collins Kimani broke through only to be stopped on the line.Kenya prop Franklin Amiani also broke through but was held up on the try line.

The relentless pressure from KCB finally bore fruit when they were awarded a penalty try in the 35th minute after an infringement by the Mean Machine fowards on the try line.Peter Mutai converted to give the Lions a 14-6 half time lead.

The second half saw KCB dominating Machine but failing to turn possession into points.They started out strongly and were awarded a second penalty try in the 55th minute following yet another infringement by the Machine forwards.Peter Mutai again converted to give KCB a 21-6 lead.

Machine again responded and their pressure bore fruit when Moses Mukabana scored a 61st minute try.Kevin Gicheru missed the conversion as the scores now read 21-11 to KCB.

In dying moments,the Machine backs failed to deal with a high ball raised by KCB prop Edward Opio.Richard Kinyanyi capitalized on this error to score his fourth try of the season.Peter Mutai again converted to end the game 28-11 in favour of the Lions.

Collins Kimani at fly half and Anthony Ochino playing at flank had a good game for the Lions.

It was the Marvin Muyera show as the KCB Cubs scrum half scored all 20 points that enabled his side see off JKUAT 20-3 in an Eric Shirley Shield fixture played at the same venue.

The Cubs started the game on a slow note and took the lead from a Marvin Muyera penalty in the 6th minute.The Cubs were forced into an early substitution when winger Mike Kwambo sustained a leg injury.JKUAT replied with a 12th minute penalty to level the scores at 3-3.Dan Turungi sustained an ankle injury midwway through the first half and was replaced by John Ojara.Muyera then kicked over another penatly in the 24th minute to give the Cubs a 6-3 half time lead.

In the second half,the Cubs raised the tempo of the game and scored two tries through Muyera in the 53rd and 70th minutes.He converted both tries as the game ended 20-3 to the Cubs.

Flanker Ronnie Mwenesi was outstanding for the Cubs.
